My Role          Instructional Designer, Project Manager

Project Time     January - May 2024

Overview

For new educators beginning their teaching journey or transitioning to a different school, the learning curve can be steep, particularly in mastering effective classroom management techniques. Recognizing this challenge, Teacher Compass seeks to partner with middle schools across New York City to develop a tailored solution that equips new teachers with the tools and confidence to navigate various classroom scenarios, including setting rules and expectations and managing transitions, routines, time, and behavior. Through our collaboration, Teacher Compass aims to empower new teachers to cultivate a strong foundation in classroom management, enabling them to thrive in their teaching careers and establish their teacher identity.

My Role

My role was the instructional designer, carrying out the project from start to finish, including project management, research, design, development and evaluation.

Research Plan

Content Analysis

By conducting a thorough content analysis informed by the needs/learner analysis findings and learning objectives, I will be able to develop a focused and relevant professional development program that effectively addresses the specific learning needs of new middle school teachers. It will also inform me to make the best judgements on selection criteria, organization, and prioritization for the learning design

Early Ideation
1. Online Learning Modules

One solution for new teachers is based on online learning modules designed through Articulate Rise 360. New teachers will be required to complete the eLearning modules before or early on in their teaching career to ensure that they are provided with basic effective classroom management strategies determined by their teaching site. The online modules will be interactive, introducing new teachers to various strategies and potential situations. Each module will conclude with quizzes at the end to assess the learner’s understanding of classroom management strategies and their ability to identify appropriate strategies in given situations.

2. Peer Mentoring Workshops

To prepare for this section, participants must first complete online modules and quizzes, engaging in reflective forums to receive feedback. Following this, workshops will be organized, led by experienced educators who will share effective classroom management strategies and facilitate discussions on their practical implementation. Through hands-on activities, role-playing, and simulations, new teachers will practice and refine their understanding of these strategies. Additionally, peer mentoring sessions will be implemented biweekly, allowing teachers to observe and provide constructive feedback on each other's classroom management techniques. To further foster learning, new teachers will be paired with mentors who offer guidance and support as they develop their skills, promoting collaborative learning within a supportive environment.

3. Demo Lesson

The demo lesson for new teachers involves creating a comprehensive classroom management plan, supported by templates and guidelines covering rules, routines, transitions, time management, and behavior expectations. This process includes peer review through demo lessons and group discussions, allowing teachers to showcase their plans and share experiences, challenges, and insights. Additionally, ongoing professional development is encouraged through resources, workshops, and coaching sessions, enabling teachers to refine and adapt their management techniques over time.

Design Solution

Drawing on elements from the early ideas, this program will be a two-week intensive online course concluding with a presentation of a demo lesson with feedback from peer teachers. New teachers will be required to complete the eLearning modules before or early on in their teaching career to ensure they are provided with basic effective classroom management strategies determined by their teaching site. Each module will conclude with quizzes to assess the learner’s understanding of classroom management strategies and their ability to identify appropriate strategies in given situations. Their learning would also be assessed through a general classroom management plan that they design, supported by templates and guidelines covering rules, routines, transitions, time management, and behavior expectations at the school. Additionally, ongoing professional development is encouraged through resources, workshops, and coaching sessions, enabling teachers to refine and adapt their management techniques over time.

Learning Theories
Constructivism:

Incorporating multimedia elements and opportunities for reflection allows learners to construct their understanding of classroom management strategies based on their experiences, prior knowledge, and interactions with the content

Scenario-based learning engages learners in active participation and helps them construct their understanding of classroom management through firsthand experiences and reflection.

Social Learning Theory:

Discussion forums or virtual meetings encourage collaborative learning and knowledge sharing among teachers, promoting social interactions and the exchange of ideas

Peer mentoring sessions provide opportunities for observation, modeling, and learning as new teachers observe experienced educators and peers demonstrating effective classroom management techniques.

Situated Learning:

The demo lesson integrates situated learning theory by immersing new teachers in real-world classroom management scenarios. Through hands-on experiences and collaboration, they apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, enhancing their understanding and ability to adapt strategies to diverse teaching environments. This approach fosters peer learning and builds confidence, equipping teachers with the skills needed for effective classroom management and student success.
